Take Back the Night actions against sexual violence, across U.S. and Canada, 2012-2018
Between January 2012 and June 2018, campus members across the U.S. and Canada organized at least 71 Take Back the Night marches, vigils, rallies, and other protests as part of a global movement campaign to end sexual violence in all forms. These protests were coordinated with the TBTN U.S.-based non-profit organization. In line with TBTN practices, protests were held throughout the year, with no set date, although most were mobilized in April (Sexual Assault Awareness Month) and October (Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness Month). Events ranged from a September 2012 march at University of King's College and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where organizers condemned rape culture including, at other Canadian universities, male students' "no consent" chants celebrating rape of underage girls, to an April 2017 march at the University of Louisville in Kentucky where speakers and survivors shared stories with a standing room-only audience.
