This website, “A Decade of Mass Campus Protests: An Archive of U.S. and Canadian Higher Ed Activism in the 2010s,” is a protest archive for campus activists. It’s a window into left and liberatory organizing in this decade, when anti-racist, labor, and other Left activist resurged. This website also is a toolkit that makes movement histories relevant to activism now.

The website is a project of the HiPED Lab, led by Prof. Ellen Berrey (University of Toronto) and Dr. Alex Hanna (Distributed AI Research Institute). Lab members Nathan Kim (DAIR and University of Michigan) played a central role in conceptualizing, designing, and creating the website, and Kristen Bass (University of Toronto) contributed to the content. Journalist Decca Muldowney wrote the Stories.

Crucially, the HiPED team co-created the website with the HiPED Advisory Collective, which included activists who played a role in these protests as students in the 2010s, current organizers, and critical technologists:

The centerpiece of this website, and the HiPED Lab, is the Higher Ed Protest Event Dataset (HiPED), an innovative and unprecedented dataset on higher education protests in the U.S. and Canada. A team of 29 research assistants helped to build HiPED, and now the Lab is publishing articles on the data with collaborators.
