Occupy Education campaign for higher education funding, 2012
In March 2012, the Occupy Education coalition organized a series of protests across the country to oppose government funding cuts, student debt, and the corporatization of higher education. The campaign, with at least 11 protests, included a March 1 National Day of Action with thousands of students, educators, and parents who participated in walkouts, rallies, and marches from New York City to Columbus, Ohio. Many protests were in California, including the “999 Mile March for Education and Social Justice” spanned from San Francisco to the state capitol, Sacramento over four days. On the March 5 Day of Action in California, activists occupied the capitol building; over 300 protesters inside and outside the building discussed and voted on their demands during the "People's Assembly." They issued five demands to the state, such as passing the "millionaires tax," canceling all student debt, democratizing the administrations of the state's public universities, and fully funding all education.
