California Faculty Association "Fight for Five" campaign, 2015-2016
The California Faculty Association's "Fight for Five" campaign called for a 5% increase in salaries for faculty members across the California State University system, from October 2015 through spring 2016. CSU faculty were paid less on average than faculty at peer institutions. With at least 10 protests across the state, faculty, students, and staff pushed for a higher salary increase than the Office of the Chancellor's proposed 2% increase. Actions included a November 2015 march and blockade in downtown Long Beach, with over 1,000 CFA members and supporters blocking off streets where the California State University Board of Trustees were meeting. Faculty union members from all 23 CSU system campuses wore red shirts with the slogan, "I don't want to strike but I will," conveying the CRA's threat to strike. In April 2016, after CFA members voted to strike, the chancellor agreed to an even higher pay increase: 10.5% over two years, for about 26,000 professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors, and coaches.
